Giant pergola to extend Queenstown’s thriving Remarkables Market.

A six tonne giant pergola was lifted into the sky at first light yesterday morning above Remarkables Park Town Centre as it made its short journey through Remarkables Park streets to its new permanent home at the Remarkables Market.

Until very recently the attractive purpose-built oregon structure was the focal point of the old Mitre 10 nursery. Now it will be used by Remarkables Park Ltd to extend the popular Remarkables Market located in the iconic red barn.

“When we knew Mitre 10 was planning its move to new Mega 10 Mega premises at Shotover Park our GM of Projects & Marketing, James O’Hagan, approached them to ask if they would support the pergola being relocated to the Remarkables Market,” said Remarkables Park Ltd CEO Alastair Porter.

“We loved the idea of giving this appealing structure a new venue. The opportunity was too good to miss,” he added.

It’s anticipated that, once erected, the giant pergola will help organisers meet growing demand for more stallholder space and give the market an even higher profile on the corner of the Eastern Arterial Road and entry to Remarkables Park’s rapidly developing entertainment precinct.

Running now for six years, and with six weeks to go in this current season, Mr Porter said that the addition of the pergola means he can now announce his commitment to this particular market site for at least the next five years.

Remarkables Market runs from Labour Weekend in October until Easter, and each week attracts over 1,000 shoppers and between 50-75 stalls each week. Dedicated stallholders, live music, free newspapers, large shared coffee tables and children’s sandpit help to create a welcoming atmosphere. It’s not only a great place to shop, it’s an ideal place to catch up with friends over coffee, brunch or lunch.

“Our big focus is on local and regionally diverse produce and high quality crafts and giftware. Our unique atmosphere is always highlighted by shoppers as a key reason they love this market,” said Market Manager Sherryn Smith.
